"Scary Movies"
Written and Illustrated by Jake Ignatowicz
In my experiment of trying different things out for the Summer Blockbuster Gallery, this was my first comic page contribution. On average it takes me a few weeks to get a regular page finished. However, I only had seven days to work on this and surprisingly, it was completed in time. At least, the original version was.
THIS version was a piece I did seven years later for a contribution to a horror/satire anthology which unfortunately never came to fruition. But even though the publication fell through, I still appreciated the chance to give the short another pass after it was brought to my attention I didn't draw it to the specific 10.25 x 6.75-inch format comic pages are printed. Doing so allowed me to, as Tony would call it, "George Lucas Special Edition" the crap out of it. Re-draw some panels, re-ink others, tighten up the borders... until version two barely resembled version one. Granted, for historical sense I should be using the illustration I posted back in 2001; warts and all. But Tony, the most vocal person against me redoing it in the first place, conceded if I was going to ride the George Lucas metaphor to death, the new versions should be the only version.
I should also mention I was in no way dishing on women or on Julia Roberts; I was merely observing what some people feel about romantic comedies. I personally like the work of Ms. Roberts and tried to get Tony to see "Erin Brockovich" when it was in the theaters. And "The Mexican" is underrated in no small part due to her involvement (and James Gandolfini's wonderful performance). Ironically, I have yet to watch "My Best Friend's Wedding". - Jake
