"Hitchin' A Ride" ("The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy")
Pencil Marks:
I've been a fan of the Douglas Adams' Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy for about 15 years now, and when I learned the double whammy info that A} they were making it into a Hollywood movie (cause it HAS been adapted before, as a BBC miniseries) and B} it was going to come out within our pre-determined timeslot for the Summer Blockbuster Gallery, I KNEW I had to draw the picture!
Of course then the problem became apparent. How do I take Adams' humorous novel and adapt it to a single pin-up? Which section of the novel do I choose? Do I pick the Heart Of Gold and it's Improbability Drive? Or do I try and capture Ford and Arthur as they lived out their lives on prehistoric Earth? Do I even try to have the white mice or the Vogons? After a couple of months of thinking I was left with as much as I started with. Nothing.
Then I was just sitting around, when a strange idea came to me. Marvin the Paranoid Android is arguably the most fan-favorite of all of the characters, and "hitchhiking" is in the title... And so a Summer Gallery picture is done.
Sure it is a simple drawing, but still a very nice one to kick off this year. - Tony
Ink Smudges: Half way through finishing this picture, I noticed something about Erik's space outfit. The round chest-plate, the broad shoulder pads, tubing-like arm protection, and a bubble-head helmet. When you put those things together, it resembles a certain robot from a cult TV show. And whether Tony meant it or not, it was too good of an opportunity to pass up. Maybe I shouldn't be so vocal about it, but dammit, I really like this picture!
By the way, can you spot the 'easter egg'? - Jake
